This post is a day late because we got to Williams, AZ late last night and woke up early for a massive day at the Massive Canyon (which started with a “Western Show” around 9AM). More on that tomorrow, but today it’s all about New Mexico, which might be my favorite part of the trip to date, and as you know I really loved Little Rock…
DAY FIVE
Santa Fe, NM —> Williams, AZ
DETOURS
- Walking Tour of Santa Fe, NM courtesy of our Aunt Susan (formerly just R’s)
- Grove Cafe, ABQ, New Mexico (I can’t spell the actual name of the city) for lunch + a very special Breaking Bad-themed photo op
- Jesse Pinkman’s House for the exact same reason
- 2nd Time Thrift Shop ABQ for jean shorts because I forgot to pack them, somehow
- The El Dorado Hotel (aka Hotel to the Stars), Gallup, TX
- The Painted Desert and Petrified National Forrest
- Tinderbox Cafe, Flagstaff, AZ for dinner
PLAY BY PLAY-ISH
- It is worth staying at the Inn of the Governor’s in Santa Fe, NM for the free buffet breakfast alone. Chiliqueles (sp?), Spanish scrambled eggs, fresh tortillas and killer coffee FOR FREE.
- I successfully picked out the single most expensive topaz bracelet in all of Santa Fe. I proceeded to buy the single most reasonably priced sterling silver bracelet in all of Santa Fe’s plaza flea market.
- We are now the proud possessors of a photo of a packet of Stevia sitting on a very specific table inside a very icon cafe. If you know what that means then you know what that means. If you don’t then you still need to watch Breaking Bad, pronto.
- You don’t know kitch until you’ve visited to Hotel El Dorado in Gallup. It’s a Wes Anderson set, and I made R promise that we could someday stay there.
- New Mexico is really into its Native American heritage, or at least that’s the impression we got from the number of giant tee-pees on the side of Highway 40.
- After 30.75 years of life, I finally learned how to use cruise control and it. is. awesome!!! That said I don’t like to use it a lot because it feels like cheating.
- Add the Painted Desert and Petrified National Forrest to your bucket list. It really is painted, and they really are petrified (which means turned into this crystal-like form that makes zero sense). Totally amazing on both fronts. Also, R developed a strange obsession with Petrogylphs (like Hieroglyphics but on rocks inside the Painted Desert). It’s not that I wasn’t into them, I just wasn’t AS into them as R because no one was or ever will be.
- And finally, there is no sunset like the sunset you’ll see driving into Flagstaff, AZ on Route 40.
