Today, last year: “Are people still being stood up”

June 30, 2010

Today – in the spirit of I-am-too-swamped-to-write-three-original-posts-this-week, we re-visit a classic query from the year past.

Geanna brought it up first. “I wonder if people are still being stood up…” she said.
I had to stop and think about all the dates my friends had been on in the past few years. Then when that proved futile I had to think about all the dates I’d seen recounted on reality television in the past few years. No — no one was stood up.
Could it be true that people no longer just don’t show up to a date? No one makes a plan to meet somewhere then forgets or blows it off or — in blind date scenarios — sees the girl/guy and aborts mission?

I promise a new post tomorrow. Other than crying my eyes out at this week’s episode of So You Think You Can Dance, I’m without plans.

  1. I can’t comment on the dating scene at all, but I’ve been stood up by my friends on various occasions. They usually apologise and have an explanation later, but it’s pretty annoying when it happens.

  2. OH…I wish this were true. I was stood up back in March. Asked on a date by a long time friend because we wanted to take things to the next level. We made the Friday night plan- details TBD…and he never called to finalize plans and we haven’t spoken since. I compare dating to basketball so after he pulled this little shenanigan- I “Cut him from my team.”

  3. Sadly, I stood someone up last fall. And then ignored his calls for days afterward because I felt so bad about it.

…and then, a month later, I ran into him at a bar and he asked me why I didn’t show up/didn’t answer his calls.

I asked if he wanted the truth, or a lie.

He said truth, so I told him the truth.

He was the third date in one day and I just couldn’t find the energy to deal with him.

    …whoops.

I still feel bad about that one.
