To be totally honest, I haven’t written about the lost distance thing because I don’t know what to say. I’ve never really done it.
There was a brief, undefined something with a guy in D.C. while I was in New York, but I don’t think you can count it if it ends before it’s defined. And then I did first meet R while he was here in L.A., and I was still living in New York, but that would lend itself to a post about the benefits of getting to know someone long distance (yes, benefits. I’ll get to that story soon). I met him in my pursuit of opportunities in L.A., so the plan was set to move.
Regarding how to handle a committed, long distance relationship; if you should knowingly enter into a long distance situation; and the elephant in the room of any such set up, if and when one among your couple should take the plunge to move – I’m not really qualified to comment. Not that that’s stopped me before…
What prompted this post were the two separate e-mails from two separate readers last week.
The first wasn’t technically about a long distance relationship, or rather, the e-mailer didn’t think it was. It was (paraphrased), “what are your thoughts on balancing a relationship and career?” the balance, in this person’s situation, being when to make a location move in pursuit of career that would take her away from her serious relationship. A question of priority, but one in which one option means choosing to go long distance.
The second was also about the decision to enter into a long distance relationship, but in this e-mailer’s scenario, the couple just got together. So it’s (paraphrased), “Should I do it? Is it a waste of time? If I do it, what should I expect?” and the scariest question of all, “Do you think it can work?”
At first they read like two completely different issues. One is about the factors surrounding choosing career over relationship when that choice means a long distance set up is in store. The other is about choosing a long distance relationship when life is otherwise peaceful, easy, and un-drama-filled.
But as I talked the scenarios over with Dani Rosen (who is now, “never leaving L.A.”) I started to realize that I was saying the same words and formulating the same thoughts for both, regardless of their differences.
Do you take the risk or not? What’s more important, maintaining things as they are or knowing what they could be? How could you possible know how poorly or well it could go unless you try?
I want to be clear up front that I believe all long-distance relationships are very difficult. They can work, of course, and you hear stories about incredible things happening, but the situation is not ideal.
But the question in both these scenarios is what’s worse? – risking and failing or never knowing what could have been?
For the career versus relationship question, how do the two options look? Option one, you put career first and make the move away from your boyfriend. That decision puts too much of a strain on your relationship, and it crumbles – maybe because the strain was too great; maybe because your other half resented you choosing something over the relationship. But in this situation there are options. He could move to where this career opportunity is for a period of time. You could agree that if it isn’t working, you’ll consider moving back. People and places and jobs are movable, so the idea that one person is choosing to destroy the relationship isn’t quite the case. Like so many things, the only thing you can be sure about is what happens if you don’t pursue the career opportunity, and that’s the you’ll never get that same opportunity at that same time again. The relationship may fail for its own reasons. You may suffer a greater strain because you’re now resentful that you turned down the opportunity. Or, yes, another opportunity much closer may present itself, but let’s pretend this is the opportunity of a lifetime.
I’m hesitant to tell anyone what to do. Every single scenario has its own set of issues – issues you can’t fully spell out in an e-mail. All I’ll say is that if it were me, I think I would go.
Which is my same thinking around the question of whether or not to enter into a long distance relationship in the first place. In this case I think the risk of the unknown is greater than the risk of trying. Yes, you could be frustrated. Yes, you could lose money traveling back-and-forth. Yes, it may end badly, leaving you upset and having “wasted your time.” Or you could discover that long distance works well as a the starting point for an incredible future and eventually marry the guy. Extreme, I know, but it could happen.
I am, admittedly, a risk taker, so all this thinking comes with the disclaimer that it’s based on the mind of a person who recently moved clear across the country to pursue a very different life. My attitude about that move was always that I was taking more a risk by not doing it then by doing it and failing. I don’t sit well in the unknown. I also truly believe that people are movable, and life is long, and patience under tough times is the greatest indicator of how you’ll deal with the rest of what’s to come.
But that’s me, and considering my very first disclaimer – I’ve never, technically, been through a long distance relationship – it’s probably best if some of the rest of you who have weigh in…

You have to be on the same page… all the time. I was in a long distance relationship for years. At the farthest we were transatlantic, at the closest, we were three hours away, and by the time we lived in the same city, we were crumbling.
But I knew, without a doubt, that he would pick up and move to be with me. He would put me ahead of a job, knowing he could get something in a new place. It was that security that let me feel the same: I would have moved for him, left my friends and family and the life I knew to be near him.
Unfortunately you need more than that — obviously. And our timing was off. I wasn’t in a place in my life to commit to something that wasn’t in my … time zone. And I became very very resentful. I hurt him, he gave up and became careless and hurt me too.
I think beginning in a long distance is a hard determination for your future together. You have no idea how your day to day would be. I’ve dated people since who I rarely talk to when I am not with them, but together, it just… works… no explanation needed. After four years, I never had the chance to try that out with my ex.
On the other hand, if through open communication, determination and, as soppy as it sounds, love, then I think you have a more solid foundation than anyone out there. If you can get through that, then you’re good to go boys and girls….
… unless you realize that you can’t stand being near them once you live together.

I’ve done long distance twice. Once for 6 months that turned long distance once the BF’s company closed the local office and he was transferred out of state to a different office. The second time was for a year and that relationship started long distance. It actually started with a drunk makeout at the BF’s brother’s (my friend) birthday party, haha. I did this for about seven months between NY and San Francisco. I hadn’t planned to move to California at first, but the place grew on me and eventually I found myself daydreaming about my life in sunny SF.

Who doesn’t want to get whisked away every five weeks to the other side of the country to enjoy three blissful days of boyfriend vacation?
I’m still in California and very happy with my decision. But if I can give everyone involved in an LDR one major consideration, it’s to make sure that your SO is included in as many aspects of your life as possible… not just the shiny, easy ones.
I was in a long distance relationship for two years when I was in college. What made it work and last so long was constant communication. We were forced to get to know each other through long phone conversations and email. It ultimately ended because the relationship ran its course, similar to an earlier post. We were both in school and our life goals just didn’t line up. Because of school, we weren’t moveable at the time. We would have been together for 4 years by the time we were moveable…and it ended before that! Long distance relationships are HARD. While you do get more out of your phone and emails, you can’t get the same physical needs met. Every time we saw each other, even if it wasn’t fancy dinners, it was like a binge on physical contact. However, the experience was worthwhile, I learned a lot about what I want from a relationship and a partner. I think a long distance relationship can be worthwhile, just like any relationship – if this is a person you care about and want to know better – why not try it? People are moveable, but any relationship when it starts isn’t forever. You could *waste* just as much time in a long distance relationship as in a dead-end relationship: they are all risky.
I’ve been in a long distance relationship for a year and a half and couldn’t be happier…2.5 hours apart.
I’d have to agree with Kristen about the idea of a “boyfriend vacation”…it seems so light and simple to go have fun for a whole weekend, not realizing there needs to be more. Recently, my bf and I have started doing everyday things when we are together, like laundry, grocery shopping and cooking. In a way, I appreciate those times alot more than the fancy dinners and nights at the bar.
And as everyone mentioned, communication is key for a long distance relationship.
But really, when is the right time to move? And then, who moves? Do I move there, does he move here, or do we just pick an entirely different city? This to me, besides the lack of cuddling, is one of the most challenging things related to long distance relationships!
Mostly, I think it’s important to remember that what may seem like a risk to one person may not be a risk for another. Growth comes from moving outside of our comfort zones, but our comfort zones end up being very different from each others’.
For example, moving to a different country and pursuing new opportunities in the form of work, business, education and socializing comes very naturally to me. I have little problem with maintaining personal relationships over a long distance, as I end up doing this very frequently. I know this is a challenge for most people, and it becomes a risk for them. I am good at managing change, and making adjustments in my life to suit that change, so there is little risk in it for me; just inconvenience.
What is challenging to me is staying in one place, with one person, committing to an everyday shared co-existence which, on the other hand, feels like the safe option to other people. I am not good at building communities or strong foundations, because I so frequently disrupt them by moving somewhere else. I need to work on solving disagreements, because it is much easier to move away from them and use distance as an excuse to grow apart.
Distance is good at holding on to the people whose friendships have strong roots in my life, and at uprooting the people who I do not feel especially close with. It’s a great buffer, and it ends up being a fantastic comfort zone. You never have to commit very long to something, because something else will be coming along soon to take you somewhere else entirely. But making changes in my life for another person, like deferring a job or education opportunity, and making small sacrifices to give myself the chance to stay in one place, with one person… that’s the biggest risk I’ve ever taken.
It is scary to see how many posts start with “I was once in a lDR…” but my experience in a long distance has been… thrilling, to say the least. We met randomly in a weekend vacation, then continued talking but soon after he left to basic training for the Army. We connected in such a deep level through letters for those 2 months that i can say we both fell in love before we even saw each other for the second time. We have since been in an exclusive relationship, living 4 hrs apart seeing each other twice a month or so. He is now deployed overseas and will be for another 7 months, so it’ll be a little over 2 years of a long distance relationship before we can make a move. I can’t tell you how many times we talked about whether or not we wanted to put each other through this hell and if we were willing to compromise through a deployment, because anyone in love with a deployed soldier will tell you, it takes A LOT out of both of you. We are staying strong with emails and occasional calls and care packages, and the plan is to move in together a little after his homecoming, and i couldn’t be more elated!
I guess where i’m trying to go here is, he’s moving to my state, leaving his family and all that he knows, for me. We are both in our early 20s and the thought is terrifying, but if we made it this far, it’s only fair to give it a try.
