1. I mean… doesn’t it just depend what you’re looking for? When you’re in your early 20’s you’re not necessarily looking to date someone you’ll be with forever… or maybe you are! I know I’m not (I’m 22).

   I guess when you get to be later on in your 20’s and you start thinking you want to get married at some point, then for your sake you probably don’t want to date someone you know you’re going to dump eventually because that is not conducive to your goal.

2. I think ultimately it’s not okay.

   When I started dating an ex back in college he said to me, “I’m not that good at relationships. I don’t want to screw you up for the next guy.” To which I responded, “If we’re talking about my next relationship already, why am I bothering with this one?” He said, “So, do you think you’re going to marry me?”

   I told him that the answer wasn’t that simple. I had no idea what the future would bring (turns out that it brought being cheated on two years into the relationship, but I digress) and that sure, that was something that could wind up being a possibility, but that I didn’t know what was going to happen. That said, if I knew the relationship had no possibility of a future then we’d both just be wasting our time.

   I think that expiration dating is kind of inherently selfish. The idea that someone sticks around and stays in a relationship because they like the perks, but isn’t interested in a potential future (in whatever form that might take — let’s just leave it open-ended for the sake of argument, doesn’t have to mean marriage) the person they’re with could almost just be anyone. It takes on kind of an impersonal sheen, like “I like what you’re doing for me and I think that it’s great, but I’m not really interested in you, at least not enough that I could imagine this going somewhere.”

   It’d definitely be leading the other person on. If we take your example of wanting kids vs not wanting kids, the person who does want them could wind up sticking it out bc they thing you’ll change (or vice versa) and when you/they don’t, well then someone has just given up something they felt really strongly about or — in the case of a woman who wants kids — wasted x amount of time before her uterus’ expiration date with someone who’s never gonna put a baby there (on purpose).

   Obviously it’s a complicated issue, but I think if one party knows that the other doesn’t have any real potential, sticking it out is just an exercise in futility — and the longer they stay together the more potential there is for a messy break-up.

3. Okay, so yeah, it takes time to get to know someone. But if you already know you don’t want to be with them for the long haul, then I don’t think it’s fair. You are keeping both yourself and them from meeting new people and taking new opportunities. 4. I totally struggle with this question too. Probably because I hate commitment and I seem to attract guys that want to sign me up for a life sentence after one kiss.

   But anyway, I think it’s okay if you’re both on the same page and are content to live in the moment, letting whatever happens happen. But if he’s naming your children and you’re scoping out other boys at the bar, you should probably re-evaluate things.

5. IMHO, there’s too much emphasis on “finding the one” or the “person who’s going to make you whole” or whatever. If two people enjoy each other’s company, then what the heck; hang out, go to parties, do freaky things together, have coffee/brunches/dinners, whatever floats your boat. It’s essential (in all relationships) to be honest about how you feel and where your head’s at. If you’re with someone because you have a good time and you’re not sure about the long-term potential, tell them that’s what you’re thinking. Also tell them if/when your thinking changes. Broken hearts are born of mismatched expectations, but if you’re consistently on the same page, no one should be upset.

6. Yeah sure, men do it all the time. Why shouldn’t woman? I would think it would be harder on you in the long run because the more time you spend with him, the stronger your relationship will be. Truthfully he doesn’t really know that he doesn’t want kids, most men don’t know until they actually hold their own baby in their arms but you also don’t want to hold on to someone that might never change his mind about having kids. If you can stay detached and keep yourself from developing strong feelings for him then I really don’t see the harm in having fun with him so long as he knows where you stand with the relationship, he might not be opposed to that but I would definitely let him know that you have no intentions of spending the rest of your life with someone who doesn’t someday want to have children.

7. I think it’s fine if the two people are truly both comfortable with taking things one day at a time/living in the moment/not looking to make it into a long-term thing/whatever. I just dated someone for a bit where I was not looking for something serious and felt like they were ready to jump right in. It was quite frustrating and I ended up feeling like the bad guy because I didn’t want to commit, so we broke it off.

   Anyway I guess the point I’m trying to make is, it’s kind of like playing with fire. It CAN work, but does it usually? Not really. Kind of a buyer-be-warned situation.

12. I kind of feel like I’m in this position too – my boyfriend and I vehemently disagree on something fundamental to both of us in how we live and how we assume our identities. It’s something that I think both of us know (but won’t admit) will break us up but so far we’re fine.
