We have officially reached the half-way mark of our eight day journey. If we had more underwear and the satellite radio stations played more variety, we’d keep going for another few weeks. - Some Cherokee Trading Post on the side of the road outside OKC.
- Golden Light Cafe in Amarillo, TX for Flagstaff Pie aka Frito Pie.
- The Shed in Santa Fe for delicious, delicious New Mexican food!
- El Charro Bar in Santa Fe for three margaritas for the price of one and some vanilla pudding thing called Natilla that we could have eaten three of
PLAY BY PLAY-ISH
- Oklahoma City is really lovely but it appears that no one lives, works or goes there. We spent two hours walking around a section of commerce and business on a Wednesday morning and saw two other humans.
- The Cherokee Trading Post is like a South of the Border of the west but with less fireworks and more hand-painted pottery. I loved it very much, and I’d like to thank R for letting me stop there and buy over-priced pottery that we in no way need.
- Frito Pie is exactly as good as you’ve heard but akin to eating a pound of salt in one sitting. Don’t even think about skipping it if you’re in this part of the country. No one is above this dish.
- Amarillo, TX is exactly as bad as you’ve heard but akin to stepping inside an alternate universe where people are not in any way kidding about how much they love Texas and hate the rest of the world/humanity. That said, they have a store called Boots and Jeans where I bought boots and almost jeans, so that made it a little less miserable.

- There are these really terrifying “ghost towns” on the side of Rt. 40 from Texas into New Mexico. One called Cuervo was literally dozens of abandoned buildings that looked like a horror movie set. I both hated and loved them.
- And finally, Santa Fe, New Mexico is perfection. Small, charming, filled with delicious food, easy to tackle in a few hours and just gorgeous. Our little Inn even had a fire place in the room! And we ate so many delish red chili dishes. And I bought a Navajo-made bracelet! And we saw the Oldest House in America. If things don’t work out in LA I’m going to move to Santa Fe, grow my hair out super long and live in an adobe house painted turquoise insane.
